In a show of support for his fellow Canadian rapper, Drake has shared a petition calling for Tory Lanez to be pardoned and released from prison. Lanez is currently serving a 10-year sentence for shooting Megan Thee Stallion in 2020.
Drake has been a steadfast supporter of Lanez, even after his conviction. Last year, Drake posted a picture of Lanez with the caption "3 you," seemingly referencing the shooting incident. He also appeared to rap about the situation on his 2022 song "Circo Loco," joking about Megan's claims of being shot.
This prompted a strong response from Megan, who called out Drake and other rappers for making light of the situation. "Stop using my shooting for clout bitch ass N-ggas! Since when tf is it cool to joke abt women getting shot!" she wrote on social media.
Now, Drake has taken his support a step further by sharing a petition on his Instagram Stories that calls for Lanez to be pardoned by California Governor Gavin Newsom. The petition argues that Lanez's conviction was unjust and that he should be released from prison less than two years into his 10-year sentence.
The relationship between Drake, Lanez, and Megan Thee Stallion has been contentious since the 2020 shooting incident. Megan's recent "Hiss" single appeared to take a shot at Drake for his perceived support of Lanez.
Lanez has faced additional challenges in recent weeks, having been stabbed 14 times by a fellow inmate while in prison. He suffered two collapsed lungs in the attack but is expected to recover.
Drake's public advocacy for Lanez's release is sure to further inflame the tensions surrounding this high-profile case. As the legal process continues to play out, the hip-hop community remains divided on the appropriate response.
