In a new Gatorade commercial, Kendrick Lamar seems to make a reference to his past beef with fellow rapper Drake. The ad features Lamar narrating while "Peekaboo" plays in the background, and towards the end he looks directly into the camera and says, "Going the distance. Losing. So I know I always win."
This line appears to be a nod to Lamar's victory over Drake in their highly publicized feud a few years ago. Lamar is widely considered to have come out on top in that clash of the titans, solidifying his status as one of the greatest rappers of his generation.
The Gatorade partnership is a major milestone for Lamar, as he has become the first rapper ever to sign an endorsement deal with the energy drink brand. This latest ad is the first to be released as part of that new partnership.
While Lamar may have triumphed over Drake, it seems there is a new challenger emerging in the form of Joey Bada$$. The New York rapper has been taking shots at Lamar and the entire Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) crew in recent diss tracks.
On the song "My Town," Bada$$ rapped, "I'm the real boogeyman, y'all n****s should be afraid / Get the general, I'm killing his troops." He also added, "Don't make me Pulitzer, better be wise because / I'm dottin' T's and cross your eyes like Whitaker."
Bada$$ continued the onslaught on the track "The Finals," where he saluted Lamar but made it clear he's ready to step up and provide some competition: "I salute you Kenny but I know you well aware / You lookin' for some competition? Then just know that I'll be right here."
With Lamar solidifying his legacy and a new challenger emerging in Bada$$, the landscape of hip-hop continues to evolve. Fans will no doubt be eagerly anticipating any further developments in this brewing rivalry.
