Pusha T and Kanye West have had one of the most renowned musical partnerships in hip-hop over the past decade. As members of the iconic group Clipse and later through Pusha's work on Kanye's GOOD Music label, the two artists have created some of the genre's most acclaimed projects.
However, in a series of recent interviews, Pusha T has pulled back the curtain on the strained relationship he's had with Kanye, even at the height of their creative collaborations.
In a conversation with The New York Times' Popcast, Pusha openly admitted that he and Kanye have never seen "eye to eye" beyond just making music together.
"I mean, we made great music. Outside of music, we're nothing. Outside of that, his principles, his morals, his mindset — we don't see eye to eye hardly ever and we never have," Pusha revealed.
The Virginia rapper went on to tell GQ that Kanye is fully aware of the issues Pusha has directly brought to his attention, but chooses to address them in a very public manner instead.
"The one thing that I can say about [Ye] is that he knows that every issue that he's having and crying about online right now, I've told him distinctly about those things. He don't talk to me like he talks to others," Pusha stated.
He attributed Kanye's "genius-level intuition" as a key reason why their relationship has become so strained over the years. "That's why me and him don't click, because he knows what I really, really think of him. He's showed me the weakest sides of him, and he knows how I think of weak people," Pusha explained.
The tension between the two artists has been simmering for some time, with Pusha even referencing Kanye's delayed Yeezy releases on Clipse's recent single "Ace Trumpets." It remains to be seen if the longtime collaborators will be able to reconcile their differences in the future.
Ultimately, Pusha T's candid comments shed new light on the complex personal dynamics that can exist even between the most celebrated creative partners in hip-hop. As fans, it's a valuable reminder that the music industry is not immune to the same interpersonal challenges that arise in any professional relationship.
