Despite being incarcerated, R. Kelly's music catalog continues to generate revenue that is being used to pay off his legal debts. According to court documents from the Eastern District of New York, payments totaling $520,549.90 from Kelly's catalog have gone towards covering restitution, fines, and penalties related to his convictions.
The breakdown of the payment includes:
- $379,649.90 in restitution
- $100,000 fine
- $40,000 Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act assessment
- $900 special assessment
This payment comes as R. Kelly remains in prison, serving a 30-year sentence for sex trafficking charges as well as a concurrent 20-year sentence for child pornography. In October, the disgraced R&B singer attempted to take his convictions to the Supreme Court, but his appeal was denied.
Interestingly, Kelly has also filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Penal System and gossip blogger Tasha K, accusing them of violating his privacy by allegedly accessing and publishing his private prison emails and call logs. The government has fired back, requesting the case be dismissed and arguing that the United States cannot be held liable for the actions of individual prison employees.
Despite his legal troubles, R. Kelly's music catalog continues to generate revenue that is being used to pay off the hefty judgments against him. This underscores the lasting impact and commercial viability of his hit songs, even as the singer himself remains incarcerated. As the various legal battles surrounding R. Kelly continue to unfold, this latest development serves as a reminder of the complex and multi-faceted nature of his ongoing saga.
