At Google's I/O 2025 conference, the tech giant made it clear that the traditional concept of Search is firmly in its rearview mirror. Google is ushering in a new era where AI agents will be the primary way users interact with and discover content on the web.
The biggest announcement from I/O was that Google is now offering an AI mode for all Search users in the United States. This gives hundreds of millions of people the ability to converse with an AI agent that can visit web pages, summarize them in custom ways, and even assist with shopping and research tasks.
Google is taking this AI-powered web interaction even further with its Project Mariner. This service provides an even more hands-off AI agent for Google's Ultra subscribers, capable of handling up to 10 different tasks simultaneously. The agent will navigate web pages and take actions on the user's behalf, freeing them up to focus on other work.
In addition, Google is making its powerful Deep Research agent more personalized, integrating it with users' Gmail and Google Drive. This agent can visit dozens of relevant websites and generate thorough research reports tailored to individual needs. Google is also further integrating its multimodal, real-time AI experience, Project Astra, into Search and Gemini, enabling more natural voice-based interactions with AI.
This shift towards AI agents represents a major rethinking of how Google delivers information from the web to users. The rise of ChatGPT has forced Google to accelerate its AI ambitions, recognizing that the traditional search engine model may no longer be sufficient.
However, this transition to an "agentic web" is not without its challenges. Concerns have been raised about the potential impact on ad-supported business models, as well as the persistent problem of AI hallucinations - the tendency for these systems to generate inaccurate or fabricated information.
Despite these hurdles, Google is pushing ahead with its AI agent vision, likely recognizing that the future of the web and the company's own dominance is at stake. As the company that has done more than any other to shape the modern web, Google's reorientation around AI agents could prove to be a pivotal moment in the evolution of the internet.
