Tyler, The Creator, the acclaimed rapper and founder of the influential collective Odd Future, has once again stirred up controversy with his latest declaration – he wants podcasts to be banned. In a recent interview with The Cut, the outspoken artist shared his strong disdain for the current podcast culture, arguing that it gives a platform to people "who aren't smart and just want attention" to be "loud and incorrect."
Tyler's criticism of podcasts is not new. Last year, he stated that if he were president, the first thing he would do is "take podcast mics away from n-ggas." Now, he has doubled down on his stance, further elaborating on his issues with the medium.
"Where are the people with skills? We need electricians, we need more drummers, painters, teachers. Everybody with a mic is crazy. I just think that shit is gross," Tyler said, suggesting that the proliferation of podcasts has overshadowed the importance of traditional skilled professions and creative pursuits.
However, Tyler did acknowledge a couple of podcasts that he actually enjoys, namely "Deante Kyle is sick, and The Cutting Room Floor is sick. Those are two podcasts that are in the right direction."
This is not the first time Tyler has expressed his strong opinions on the state of the music industry and the culture surrounding it. Last year, he criticized a "white kid" who he felt was mocking and disrespecting the legacy of hip-hop icons like Future and Gucci Mane.
"It's not even like satire, it's like, 'I'm just joking, I'm just mocking it.' But I'm like, 'No, no, no, you can't do [that].' And I hold rap music so close to my heart 'cause this shit changed my life and everyone's life around me, and I'm a nerd about this shit," Tyler said, emphasizing his deep reverence for the art form.
Tyler's stance on podcasts is sure to spark further debate and discussion within the creative community. While some may agree with his concerns about the oversaturation of the medium and the perceived lack of substance, others may argue that podcasts provide a valuable platform for diverse voices and perspectives.
Regardless of one's stance, Tyler's outspoken nature and his unwavering commitment to his artistic vision continue to make him a polarizing figure in the entertainment industry. As he continues to push boundaries and challenge the status quo, it will be interesting to see how the industry and the public respond to his latest controversial declaration.
