In a recent interview, hip-hop duo Clipse opened up about their falling out with Def Jam Records. The brothers, Pusha T and No Malice, claim they were forced to part ways with the label after refusing to remove Kendrick Lamar's guest verse from their new album "Let God Sort Em."
According to Pusha T, Def Jam wanted the duo to ask Lamar to censor his verse on the track "Chains & Whips." When Clipse refused, the label threatened to drop them entirely. Pusha explained, "They wanted me to ask Kendrick to censor his verse, which of course I was never doing. And then they wanted me to take the record off. And so, after a month of not doing it, Steve Gawley, the lawyer over there was like, 'We'll just drop the Clipse.'"
The label was reportedly concerned about the optics of Clipse, who are known rivals of Drake, collaborating with Kendrick Lamar while Drake had an ongoing lawsuit against Def Jam's parent company UMG.
Ultimately, Clipse departed Def Jam and eventually signed with Roc Nation to release their highly anticipated reunion album "Let God Sort Em." The project is set to drop on July 11 and will be executive produced by their longtime collaborator Pharrell.
This clash with Def Jam marks a tumultuous period for Clipse, but it seems the duo has emerged stronger, ready to deliver their first joint album in over a decade. Fans are eagerly awaiting to hear the final product, including Kendrick Lamar's controversial contribution that caused so much conflict.
